Home Inventory Tracker is a sophisticated, fully offline mobile application created for homeowners, renters, landlords, and families who demand accurate control over their household asset documentation. Unlike cloud-dependent alternatives, this application operates on a zero-telemetry, no-account, local-first architecture — every byte of data resides exclusively on the user’s device, with no external dependencies, subscriptions, or surveillance.

The application transforms the tedious process of household inventory management into a streamlined, professional-grade workflow suitable for insurance documentation, warranty tracking, estate planning, asset valuation, and general household organization.

Privacy by Architecture

The application was designed from the ground up with a singular principle: the user owns their data absolutely. There are no cloud sync services, no analytics pings, no account creation flows, and no backend infrastructure. The entire application — from the SQLCipher-encrypted SQLite database to the locally-scheduled notification engine — operates entirely on-device. Data portability is achieved through user-initiated encrypted ZIP backups and CSV exports, not through vendor lock-in.

Offline-First, Offline-Only

Every feature, from inventory CRUD operations to PDF report generation to warranty notification scheduling, functions without network connectivity. The application does not merely tolerate offline operation — it requires nothing else.

Feature Architecture

Inventory Management / Home Contents Management

The core data model supports exceptionally rich item records with over 30 intrinsic fields plus an extensible custom key-value system:

• Identity: Name, Room Assignment, Category & Subcategory
• Classification: Brand, Model, Serial Number, Color, Size, Condition (New / Excellent / Good / Fair / Poor)
• Financial: Purchase Price, Estimated Current Value, Acquisition Date

Photo attachments are automatically compressed to a maximum of 1920×1080 resolution and 500 KB, employing a two-pass compression pipeline that minimizes storage footprint while preserving legibility.

Organizational Hierarchy

Rooms serve as the primary spatial organizational unit. Users define their living spaces (Kitchen, Living Room, Garage, Home Office, etc.) with full CRUD support and aggregated value rollups.

Occupants model household membership with shared ownership semantics. Items can be assigned to multiple occupants simultaneously, enabling accurate representation of jointly owned property.

Categories & Subcategories provide a comprehensive taxonomy with 14 built-in categories (Furniture, Electronics, Kitchen Appliances, Home Appliances, Clothing, Jewelry & Valuables, Tools, Sports & Recreation, Books & Media, Home Decor, Vehicles, Outdoor & Garden, Collectibles, Documents) encompassing 100+ pre-seeded subcategories. The system is fully extensible — users may define custom categories and subcategories at any time. Built-in categories are protected from accidental deletion.

The Power of Search, Filter & Sort

The query engine implements a debounced (300 ms) full-text search across item name, brand, model, serial number, and notes, combined with multi-dimensional filtering:

• Spatial: By room assignment
• Attributional: By occupant ownership
• Taxonomic: By category and subcategory
• Financial: By purchase price and estimated value ranges (min/max)
• Temporal: By acquisition date range
• Warranty: By warranty status (Has Warranty / Expiring Soon / Expired)

Results are sortable by name, purchase price, estimated value, acquisition date, category, or room, in ascending or descending order. Active filters are displayed as visual chips with one-tap dismissal.

A comprehensive Dashboard & Analytics

The home screen presents analytical overview:

• Aggregate Statistics: Total item count, total purchase value, total estimated value, room count, occupant count
• Recent Activity: Last 5 added items and last 5 updated items
• Warranty Alerts: Items with warranties expiring within 90 days
• Category Breakdown: Proportional visualization of item distribution across categories
• Room Breakdown: Proportional visualization of value distribution across rooms
• Onboarding Wizard: Contextual empty-state guidance for new users

Warranty Tracking & Smart Notifications

Each inventory item can be associated with comprehensive warranty metadata: start date, expiry date, provider name, and reference number. The local notification engine automatically schedules reminders at four progressive intervals:

• 90 days before expiry (advisory)
• 30 days before expiry (warning)
• 7 days before expiry (urgent)
• On the day of expiry (final)

Notifications are rescheduled on application restart and survive device reboots. Tapping a notification navigates directly to the item detail view. The dedicated warranties screen organizes items into contextual timelines: Expired, Expiring in 7 Days, Expiring in 30 Days, Expiring in 90 Days, and All Active Warranties.

PDF Report Generation

The reporting engine produces insurance-grade PDF documents in four modalities:

• Full Inventory Report: Complete catalog with cover page, item blocks with photo thumbnails, and category summary tables
• Room Inventory Report: Spatial grouping with per-room value aggregation
• Occupant Inventory Report: Attributional grouping with per-occupant asset summaries
• Category Breakdown Report: Taxonomic grouping with subcategory-level detail

All reports feature professional typography, page numbering, header/footer branding, and automatic thumbnail embedding. Outputs can be previewed, shared, or saved. The system auto-maintains a rolling window of the last 5 reports.

Data Portability and Backup

CSV Import/Export: Export the full inventory or filtered subsets with automatic header mapping. The import pipeline performs column validation, duplicate detection, room and category resolution, and produces detailed error reports.

Backup & Restore: The backup subsystem creates a self-contained ZIP archive containing the encrypted SQLite database, all photo and document attachments, and a metadata manifest. Backup filenames follow the convention home_inventory_backup_YYYY_MM_DD.zip. The system retains the 5 most recent local backups and supports sharing via the OS share sheet. The restore pipeline performs pre-import validation and atomic database replacement.

Security Architecture

• Database Encryption: SQLCipher via PRAGMA key — 64-character random key stored in platform secure storage (Android Keystore / iOS Keychain)
• Authentication: PIN (4–8 digits) or Password (6+ characters), hashed with SHA-256 and a random 32-character salt
